the estate's visual world is drawn from the farm security administration photographic archive, 1935–1944 — the great public record of the american south — held by the library of congress, alongside other collections carrying no known restrictions. scripture is printed from the king james bible, whole and cited. the beast is drawn from folklore old enough to belong to everyone.
the practice
we photograph and trace places, structures, land, and objects. we do not print the people. their faces stay in the archive, at rest, where anyone can visit them:
